Thursday Night at Dr. Seuss Family Fun Night and Friday during the Student Led Conferences, PIE (Partners in Education - not just your average PTO) will be selling Hope School Spirit Shirts and Sweatshirts. Some items are available at these two events. If you don't see what you need, PIE can place an order.

Sixth Grade STEM....Robotics
When 4th and 5th grade students attended the symphony with Mrs. Majors the 6th grade students stayed back at Hope School. They worked on programming little robots with Mrs. Spencer. Last summer Mrs. Spencer attended a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) workshop, where she learned about "Sphero" robots. This training included ONE free robot for classroom use. BUT, you know teachers they spend their own money on cool stuff... so, she bought two more.
The sixth graders had to sketch a track design (angles, parallel and perpendicular lines), build it to scale (math skill: ratios) and then program (code) the robot to navigate the track. The final test was when the "Sphero" robots actually navigated the track as designed and programmed by each student. Once the design phase changed to the building phase, some students assisted others with reducing their ratios in order to decrease the size and use less building materials. This project forced students to use a wide variety of skills to get from design to a successful track run.

The bonus? It was SO MUCH FUN!
A Day at the Symphony
Fourth and Fifth grade students attended the Spokane Symphony performance at
North Idaho College on Wednesday, February 19th.
After the performance they ate their lunches at a local park - good thing some days in February have been beautiful, warm and sunny!

Science with Fourth and Fifth Grade....
Friday's Science concept in Fourth and Fifth grade with Mrs. Spencer was all about Force and Reaction and how energy and building simple machines use force and reaction.
The students designed simple machines on Monday with design ideas and sketches. Then on Friday they had to implement their design. Modifications were made to some of the original designs as students realized some concepts were not realistic. Many also realized that communication skills were extremely important in working with their partners. A few teams spent too much time in the design phase, so they were not able to test their design completely - great learning!
The students were given cups, paper clips, a ruler and paper supplies.
What a great science lesson along with additional life long lessons in last week's Science focus!

Where in the World can Wildcats READ?
Where in the world can WILDCATS read?
At Hope Elementary School, that's where!
For several years, a local non-profit organization, Village Green, has raised funds through private donations and grants to support Book Trust in all of our LPOSD elementary schools for grades K-3. Specifically, this means that all our K-3 students get to “purchase” $7.00 worth of books each month during the school year at no cost to families. The students pick, read and keep these new books. Research tells us that when kids get to select their own books they are more likely to read them (over and over again). Village Green is currently writing grants to continue to support our students.
Annually this amount ranges between $85,000 to $90,000.
Parents look for a form coming your way this Friday for an opportunity to share your thoughts about Book Trust and our local non-profit, Village Green, for supporting this incredible program. Parent statements are important to the grant writing process, so we would love to hear from you.
Thank you very much.
See below for some great pictures showing your kids reading their new books with their K-3 grade schoolmates.
